BSV35 First WOT runs and comments

First runs at WOT of the Briggs and Stratton Vanguard 35, BSV35, with the Ace Aviation 1.8 to 1 re-drive. This engine is completely stock, including the Carb. We installed a screen over the carb intake to keep bugs out and removed the external governor arm. We are running the exhaust pipes with the $ 10 mufflers from aviation department at local TSC store. Engine noise is quiet like the BSV23. Biggest down side is weight of engine and firewall forward package. Flywheel weights 20 pounds and we have not found a light weight replacement. Even if you could save 15 pounds weight would still be an issue. Weight of bare bones engines, without flywheel, carbs, intake manifolds, exhausts for the BSV23 was 51 lbs, for the BSV35 it is 81 lbs. Everything for the 35 is heavier, prop, re-drive, mount, exhaust pipes ( larger diameter) so weight is a problem. More HP requires heavier parts. The battery had to be mounted close to starter or install much larger battery cables, we elected to install close to starter. There are a couple of changes that have been made to the mount and at least one more that needs to be made for mounting base. More to come as we put a few more hours on the engine and do some flying with it.
